The Philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein famously wrote: “The limits of my language are the limits of my world” Growing up in a small country like Uruguay, I always felt a strong desire to transcend those limits and discover a more diverse world. I fell in love with the English language when I was a little girl, as I learned the first Beatles’ songs at school, and later, as a teenager, as I spent my vacations in New York, where my family on my mother’s side lived.

When I was 8 years old, I told my parents that I wanted to become an English teacher, which I eventually did. I graduated as an English as a Foreign Language Teacher at Instituto Cultural Anglo-Uruguayo, and I taught at that Institute for four years. By then, I was already an avid reader, especially of Southern United States literature. Alarmed by the poor quality of the translations I had access to at the time, I decided to study Translation at the University of the Republic of Uruguay, and in 2000 I graduated as an English-Spanish Translator. There, I met Elizabeth and we started working together a couple of years after graduating. In time, we both specialized in health care translations, while each of us continued to develop different interests. She chose visual arts, I chose literature.

In 2001, I published my first fiction novel, La azotea (coming out in English in 2021), and my literary work opened other doors that allowed me to travel and further explore the world. I traveled to Japan, and studied Japanese for 4 years. In 2004, I was granted the Unesco-Aschberg Bursary for Artists and I traveled to France for a residency program. There, I fell in love with the language and the culture, and ended up living in France for five years.

Later, I fulfilled my dream of living in New York, where I completed my master’s degree in Creative Writing from New York University. At NYU, I taught Spanish, from beginners to advanced levels, and after I moved to Bogota (Colombia), I kept working on my three passions: translating, teaching and creative writing. In Bogota, I have been teaching creative writing at Universidad Nacional, Universidad de los Andes and Bogota City Arti Institute. My third novel, La ciudad invencible, came out in 2013, followed by a book of short stories, No soñarás flores. I have also done literary translations and subtitles for movies and TV shows.
